Often people ask how they got on this list. Well. I've given up spending a lot of time asking why about anything, especially horrible things, happen. I'm far more interested in how to fix it.

But anyway, there are several methods to get on this list.
1] Put your email address down at anything or anywhere that looks like the stuff I post.
2] Have a mutual friend with me that sends both of us a post.
3] Post to a list serve I'm on.
4] Be recommended by a friend.

Try to submit announcements two to three weeks in advance of event in plain text in the body of the email.

=item 6 Tibetan Lama in Tallahassee 10JUL2007
We have a rare opportunity this week to be with a Tibetan Buddhist monk who speaks English and understands American culture well. Lama Gursam entered the monastery at the age of 6 and received his Master's degree in advanced Buddhist phoilosophy in 1990 with a special award from His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He now divides his time between retreat and teaching in India and teachings in the US and Canada. He will be giving teachings on Tara and on the Songs of Milarepa Tuesday July 10th through Sunday July 15th at Tallahassee Buddhist Comminuty in Railroad Square. Donations are requested but no one will be turned away. All money raised goes directly towards supporting Lama Gursam's efforts. Tara is a female deity who leads all to enlightenment. Her teachings begin with an empowerment Tuesday night at 6:30pm. Contact Rachel at 544-9900 if you would like to take refuge before the empowerment.

Milarepa was a murderer and thief who, after meeting Buddha Shakyamuni and practicing diligently, became enlightened in one lifetime. His teachings begin Friday the 13th at 6:30pm and continue Saturday 10am-12pm, 2pm-5pm and on Sunday. Visit for more information about the teachings, a complete schedule, and for directions to TBC. =item 9 Recycling Presentation 16JUL2007
Hi friends,
I'd like to invite you to an event I'm sponsoring at the Miccosukee Land Cooperative Community Center on Monday evening, July 16, from 7:30 till 9:00.

Adam Schlacter, the head of Leon County's recycling program has agreed to come out to the co-op that Monday evening and answer questions. We're going to have some tables set up with samples of things that are and aren't recyclable in this part of the country. I believe there'll be some brochures available, too.
We've been saving items we're not sure about, and Adam's going to help set us straight (no small task, in some cases). If you have questions about certain materials, I'd like to encourage you to bring them with you. I'm really excited about this opportunity, and I hope that you can be there, too. Please pass the word to anyone you know who might also be interested.
Free and open to the public ... Monday, July 16, from 7:30 - 9:00.

Estimated Iraqi death due to U.S. invasion nears one million

The organization Just Foreign Policy has now created a new estimate, based on the original study, of deaths to the present day. The number they came up with is just under one million.

Iraqi civilians have been killed in numbers much larger than those that are commonly reported in our press and by our officials. The violence has only continued.

This website provides an up-to-date estimate and links to actions you can take:

The National Network Opposing Militarization of Youth, (NNOMY) is pleased to announce the launch of its new website which can be viewed at

We are excited about the website and how it can be used to help activists and counter-recruitment groups stay well connected and informed. We anticipate that this new and unique website will grow in content and assist all of us in expanding our work.

Soldier might be most severely wounded to have come home from Iraq
Parents must care round the clock for former reservist who is blind, paralyzed.

At the Tampa VA, a nurse taught Jay Briseno to swallow his saliva, a big step that allowed him to have some pureed foods instead of just tube-feeding. He has not been able to handle any solid food, though; his injuries are too profound.

Is the United States Killing 10,000 Iraqis Every Month? Or Is It More?
300 Iraqis killed by Americans each day sounds like an impossible figure, but a close look at the reported numbers of violent deaths and rate of armed patrols makes it all too likely.

BAGHDAD, 5 July (IRIN) - Fishing in the River Tigris is under threat after Imams [religious leaders], Shia as well as Sunni, issued fatwas [religious rulings] banning fishing in the river. BAGHDAD, 3 July (IRIN) - Some residents of the mainly Shia Baghdad suburb of Sadr City are fleeing their homes - apparently scared of reprisals by US troops searching the area for militants. IRAQ: Health Ministry issues warning on waterborne diseases

BAGHDAD, 3 July (IRIN) - Iraqi Health Ministry officials warned on 3 July of a possible increase in waterborne diseases among children and the elderly during the summer's hottest month of July. IRAQ: Kurdistan government appeals for medical supplies

BAGHDAD, 1 July (IRIN) - The semi-autonomous government of Kurdistan, in northern Iraq, has issued a global plea for medical supplies to ensure patients there receive required treatment. It blamed violence in other parts of Iraq for the dire shortage of supplies in the north.

OCCUPATION? What occupation? Where occupation? Anybody seen any occupation?

Report: 90 percent of Israeli settlements sprawl beyond official boundaries
Nine of every 10 Israeli settlements sprawl beyond their official boundaries in an attempt to grab more land in the occupied West Bank, which the Palestinians claim for a future state, a new report said Friday. Israel's settlements encroach on unallocated land even though most of the area in their own jurisdictions remains empty.
