Juneteenth Commemoration
Sunday, June 17, 6: 30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The old oak tree on Gaines St. and Meridian St. (parking is nearby)
To celebrate Juneteenth, honor the memories of all impacted by slavery and lynching, and bring healing to a painful site

Juneteenth, June 19th, is the day when the Emancipation Proclamation was read to African American slaves, informing them of their new freedom. This day is one of great importance for all Americans.
The Buddhist Peace Fellowship invites everyone in our community to gather at the oak tree on Gaines and Meridian in downtown Tallahassee on June 17th, the Sunday before Juneteenth. Site of numerous lynchings of African Americans, this old tree carries the weight of a violent and painful past.

To honor the memories of those who lost their lives at this site or lost loved ones there, and to bear witness to the suffering caused by such hatred and ignorance, we will hold a short ceremony with song, prayer, and meditation. As a group working for peace, we share the concerns of other peace-minded citizens and actively offer and practice alternatives to violence.

1-IRAQ: "I have to keep working despite being sexually abused"
BAGHDAD, 13 June (IRIN) - There are many very bad men in Baghdad who want to do bad things to my sisters. They stay near me when we are working and I always carry a knife with me to defend them in case someone wants to sexually abuse them.

2-IRAQ: Child labour on the rise as poverty increases
BAGHDAD, 12 June (IRIN) - Thousands of children in Iraq have moved onto the streets to help augment their family's income, either because they have lost their fathers in the violence, or because they are forced to help as their families do not consider education to be important. Some of the children have no one to look after them.

3-IRAQ: Women forced to give up their jobs, marriages
BAGHDAD, 30 May (IRIN) - When Suha Abdel-Azim, 38, received a letter from her boss saying she had to stop working for security reasons, she couldn't believe it. After three years as an engineer for a local company, she was fired without compensation.

4-IRAQ: Hundreds go missing or get killed at checkpoints
BAGHDAD, 6 June (IRIN) - Samir Waleed, 39, said he is scared to go out into the streets of Baghdad after his brother was stopped at a road block, taken away and killed two weeks ago. The deteriorated security situation in the capital has given rise to an increasing number of checkpoints in the city, which, ironically, have become dangerous in themselves.

5-IRAQ: Poor municipal services worsen Iraqi living conditions
BAGHDAD, 6 June (IRIN) - Corruption, neglect and insurgent attacks have left Iraq's public services in tatters, residents and officials say. Limited electricity and drinking water are the main problems, causing disease and frustration.

8-IRAQ war can't be won: British army chief
02 Jun 2007 There is "no way" the war in Iraq can be won by the United States and its allies, a former British Army commander said as he called for the troops to be withdrawn. General Sir Michael Rose, who commanded the United Nations Protection Force in Bosnia-Hercegovina from 1994 to 1995, said coalition forces in Iraq were facing an impossible situation. "There is no way we are going to win the war and (we should) withdraw and accept defeat because we are going to lose on a more important level if we don't,'' he said.,20867,21836084-1702,00.html

9-IRAQ " I have to scrounge around rubbish bins to feed my children":
Adeela Harith, a 39-year-old widow and mother of three, says she misses the days when her husband was daily bringing them food and when they used to sleep in a safe house in comfort. As a recently-widowed displaced person, she has no support and is now collecting left-overs from rubbish bins to feed her children.

10-IRAQ: Cancer emerges as major cause of death in south
BASRA, 31 May (IRIN) - Recent studies by medical colleges, and statistics from local morgues and hospitals, have shown a higher than expected number of cancer-related deaths in Iraq's southern provinces. According to specialists, the main causes are the increased use of unsafe products in agriculture and the long-term effects of war on health.

A soldier in Iraq asks in despair: Why are we here? After watching his roommate fatally wounded in a roadside bombing, an Army private wonders why the lives of good men are being lost when the Iraqis pose no threat to us and don’t want us there

BUSH 1-Scott Ritter | Repudiation, Not Impeachment]
Scott Ritter writes: "Any effort to impeach Bush and any of his administration found to be engaged in activities classifiable as 'high crimes and misdemeanors' would fail to rein in the unitary executive core of any successor. The Founding Fathers deliberately designed the executive branch to be strong and independent, but also made sure, through an elaborate system of checks and balances, that it operated merely as one of three separate but equal branches of government."

BUSH 2 Why Being "Worst President Ever" Is Not Enough
By James Rothenberg
If a war crime was committed, it is elementary that those that aid and abet this crime are also war criminals. This includes the Congress when it repeatedly funds the operations which are criminal. It also includes the soldiers who carry out the orders of the war criminals. And, yes, to the extent that we don't publicly object to it, you and me.

OPT: Poverty driving Palestinian children onto the streets
JERUSALEM, 12 June (IRIN) - Younis is among thousands of Palestinian children who miss school and face danger on the streets every day. He and his brothers are the family's sole earners. Surveys have found about three-quarters of street children were working because of poverty, while others said they had problems at home, including abuse.

Thunder? It's the Sound of Greenland Melting
Atop Greenland's Suicide Cliff, from where old Inuit women used to hurl themselves when they felt they had become a burden to their community, a crack and a thud like thunder pierce the air. "We don't have thunder here. But I know it from movies," says Ilulissat nurse Vilhelmina Nathanielsen. "It's the ice cracking inside the icebergs." Greenland's ice cap is melting, and faster than scientists had thought possible.
